And A Happy New Year…

// December 27th, 2009 // No Comments » // Baby, Everything Else

It’s been a wonderful Christmas break. Sometimes you don’t realize how the hustle and bustle of the work week slowly beats you down until you have some time to sit down and relax and then you realize, “Oh, I forgot what this felt like!”

While we don’t have any stories to tell from our break, I did realize a few things:

My husband is very into Christmas. I always knew this but it seems that with the baby coming in just a couple of months he really kicked his Christmas spirit into overdrive as if he was doing it to impress the baby still tucked away in my womb. He loves to hang up Christmas lights now that we have our own house and he upped his efforts this year with more lights on the house (a tradition he said will continue to grow every year until he has turned our house into a tourist attraction), red and white solar lights line our drive way which from the sky at night could easily be misrepresented as a runway for any passing airplane (I half expected to wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of a Cesna plowing through our garage), and all of the 75% off Christmas fixtures we got last year after Christmas made their from the attic and into the yard. So far he has managed to tastefully decorate the exterior of our house but I know it’s only a matter of time before he lets loose on his tacky Christmas tendancies. Having a little boy running around is only going to expedite things.

Baby clothes are gender biased. Why are there so many little boy clothes that say something about, “My Daddy Rocks”, “My Daddy Is My Hero”, “Handsome just like Daddy”, “Daddy’s Little Helper” and so on but it’s so hard to find anything that says the same about Mommy without them being pink and for girls? It seems if you want something to show how wonderful mommy is you have to have a girl. Husband tried to find a Mommy shirt for Christmas for me and baby but only found one and it was the wrong size. I don’t think our newborn will be fitting into a 19mo outfit anytime soon.

Snow is great. I just wish it would snow everywhere except on the roads. Snow also brings cold weather and this year it brought 40mph winds with it. This was not the snow experience that breeds playfulness, it was just painful to be outside.

Husband may be on the verge of convincing himself he is Santa Claus. He hid all of my presents and would not wrap them or sit them under the tree until Christmas Eve night. He even went as far as to hurry me to bed so he could wrap the presents and put them all under the tree while I slept as if I didn’t realize what he was doing. Doesn’t he know that a pregnant woman goes to the bathroom every hour ? It doesn’t matter if I go to bed early, I will still be up! He’s going to have a blast being Santa Claus with the baby and he will try his hardest to keep him believing in Santa for as long as he can (Part of me thinks that Husband still believes in Santa).

All in all it was a wonderful Christmas, highlighted by my Nike Shoxs and Husband’s ukulele and some super cute baby outfits Husband picked out for me to unwrap. It’s funny how he can pick out such wonderful things for the baby but can barely dress himself in matching colors.

With the new year only days away this was the last Christmas we will spend as a couple. From here on out we will spend them as a family. That is something worth celebrating every day.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

// November 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Everything Else

charlie--brown-thanksgivingLinus: In the year 1621, the Pilgrims held their first Thanksgiving feast. They invited the great Indian chief Massasoit, who brought ninety of his brave Indians and a great abundance of food. Governor William Bradford and Captain Miles Standish were honored guests. Elder William Brewster, who was a minister, said a prayer that went something like this: ‘We thank God for our homes and our food and our safety in a new land. We thank God for the opportunity to create a new world for freedom and justice.”
Peppermint Patty: Amen.

Marcie: Don’t feel bad, Chuck. Peppermint Patty didn’t mean all those things she said. Actually, she really likes you.
Charlie Brown: I don’t feel bad for myself, I just feel bad because I’ve ruined everyone’s Thanksgiving.
Marcie: But Thanksgiving is more than eating, Chuck. You heard what Linus was saying out there. Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together. I think that’s what they mean by ‘Thanksgiving,’ Charlie Brown.
