Six Weeks with Daddy – Day #6

// April 27th, 2010 // No Comments » // Marriage

Day #6, started off on the wrong foot and just continued from there. It seems the baby has a bit of a cold so I got him dressed yesterday morning and headed over to the doctor to confirm it was a cold. All he has is a runny nose, one episode of diarrhea and a very slight fever once. Since then he has been fine minus the runny nose. Really all I have to do is suction out his nose (which he used to not mind but now he HATES) every so often and give him some nasal drops. He is much better this evening.

After coming back home from the doctor we just stayed in the house the rest of the day so he could rest.  I suspect we will do the same tomorrow.

Working At The Car Wash…

This week baby had his two week check up with his doctor. We are happy to report that he’s a happy healthy baby and has gained almost a pound since his 4 day visit so he is up to 7lbs 7oz and 19.5 inches long. Coincidently, the exact same as his daddy was when he was born. We thought we had it timed perfectly for the visit. He just finished eating about 30 minutes before we left the house so we had a easy 2-3 hour window before he got fussy again. We also changed his diaper right before leaving to ensure a clean baby for the doctor.

One of the first things they do at the pediatricians office is have you strip your baby down so they can weigh him. As I was taking off his clothes I got a faint whiff of something foul. It seems during our 15 minute wait in the waiting room he decided that was a good time to fill his diaper up with poo. So we not only had the pleasure of changing his poopy diaper in the doctors office, but as we were wiping his butt he decided he wasn’t done pooping. So we had to sit and wait for another 3-4 minutes while he continued to poop. I’m sure the nurses there have seen everything. It just goes to show that when you have a baby, no matter how much you plan things out, things will never go according to your plan. He’s a very good baby though and rarely fusses unless he is hungry or wants to be change. Other than that he either stares around the room or sleeps quietly.

After the doctor visit we stopped by the car wash to wash the last two weeks of snow and grime off the car. He was particularly content inside the automatic car wash. After a moment, Mommy came to a realization.

“No wonder he likes this. The car wash sounds a lot like the womb.” she said.

As I listened I realized she was right. Curled up tight in his car seat with his cozy cover over him and the heat blasting it reminded him of his old home where he stayed for nine months. I’ve been to the car wash a thousand times and I never thought about the sound. It’s funny the connections you make as a parent.

Take a listen to the below video to see if you can hear some of the womb sounds.

Next time he gets fussy I’m putting him in the car seat and heading to the car wash. Sleeping baby and a clean car. Double win!

Twig and Berries. That’s My Boy! Just To Be Sure, Let’s Check It Again!

Belly of a pregnant womanAs we eagerly anticipate the arrival of our baby boy in 4 weeks, today at work there was an interesting surprise. One of the people in the building had been planning on having a baby girl and today when the baby was delivered they heard the words that I’m not exactly sure how I would react to, “It’s a boy! SURPRISE!” All these months of planning and preparing for a baby girl and it turns out it was a boy. The family spent the day scrambling around town exchanging all the girl clothes for boy clothes.

So this got me thinking about our baby. I quickly turned to Facebook to compare our 20 week  ultrasound picture to our friends (who just had a boy a couple months ago) 20 week ultrasound pictures. After flipping back and forth between pictures for about 10 minutes I had satisfied myself that the “pee pee” we saw in our ultrasound picture looks just like the one in our friends ultrasound picture. Which means it looks kind of like a turtle.

Later on in the day we our our baby doctor appointment and we were going to get a sneak peek ultrasound so the doctor could see which position the baby’s head was in. It was at this time that I casually mentioned to the doctor, “What else can this machine sneak a peek of? The reason I’m asking is because a person at work was told they were having a girl and come to find out when they delivered the baby today, it was a boy.”

The doctor laughed with me(or possibly at me) at my paranoia and she said, “We’ll see if we can take a look at that too.”

While it’s comforting to know that the babies head is in the perfect position (which was the whole point of the sneak peek ultrasound) I still needed confirmation that our boy was indeed a boy. She wiggled the probe all over and around my wife’s belly (which looked incredibly uncomfortable) and eventually found both legs. From here we just needed to find what was in between. End result: Boy parts! The 20 week ultrasound showed us the twig, todays ultrasound confirmed the berries.

I also googled ultra sound pictures when I got home from the doctor just to compare even more. I apparently enjoy stressing myself out over the things I have absolutely no control over. That and I wanted to make sure I didn’t have to paint the room again. That would have sucked.
